Keyboard Shortcuts
A keyboard shortcut is a small combo of keys you press together to run an action instantly — instead of hunting through menus with your mouse. For example, rather than clicking a Save button, you press the save shortcut. This guide is written so that someone who has never used a single shortcut can follow along, and you never have to memorize any of them.
You can do everything in the nidavellir workspace with a mouse, and once a few keys feel natural you can move a lot faster. On macOS the modifier is ⌘ (Command); on Windows and Linux it is Ctrl (read every ⌘ below as Ctrl). ⇧ means the Shift key.
⌘ — Command key
On a Mac keyboard, the key next to the spacebar. Windows and Linux keyboards have no ⌘, so use the Ctrl key instead. So “⌘S” means Command+S on a Mac and Ctrl+S on Windows/Linux.
⇧ — Shift key
The same Shift key you use to type capital letters. When a shortcut shows ⇧, hold it down together with the others.
Ctrl — the Windows/Linux modifier
The stand-in for ⌘ on Windows and Linux. If you are on Windows or Linux, read every ⌘ in this doc as Ctrl.
How to read a combo like ⌘⇧M
Symbols written together mean “press them at the same time.” ⌘⇧M means hold ⌘ and ⇧, then tap M (holding them together matters more than the order).
Inside the app you can always press ⌘K to open a searchable command palette. Just type the name of what you want and run it — which means you never need to memorize a single shortcut below. Think of ⌘K as the safety net you can always fall back to.
One more handy key is ⌘/, which opens the in-app shortcut cheat sheet that always stays up to date. The lists below are grouped in the same order as that cheat sheet.
At first, one or two shortcuts are plenty. Most people just remember ⌘K (command palette) and ⌘S (save), and find the rest through ⌘K whenever they need them.
Shortcuts don't fire while the caret is in a plain text input such as a title or the chat box (so they never eat your typing or trigger by accident). Click outside the field, or move focus elsewhere, and they work again.

The easiest way to start without memorizing — search by name with ⌘K. Try typing these:
Jump to a tab

Forget a key? No problem. The ⌘K command palette can run every action above — just search for it by name.
Do I have to memorize the shortcuts?
No — you can memorize zero of them. Press ⌘K to open the command palette and search for what you want by name; it runs every shortcut in this doc. The ones you use often will stick on their own over time.
I'm on Windows/Linux and there's no ⌘ on my keyboard.
That is expected — ⌘ is a Mac-only key. On Windows and Linux, replace every ⌘ here with Ctrl. For example, ⌘S becomes Ctrl+S.
I pressed a shortcut and nothing happened.
If your cursor is inside a text field like a title or the chat box, shortcuts stay off. Click an empty area outside the field, then try again. Still stuck? Press ⌘/ to open the cheat sheet and double-check the exact key.
